Car parked on the street with a car cover on it for protection

In this guide, we’re here to hold your hand through the process and remove as much of the guesswork as possible. We’ll discuss what car covers are, how they work, as well as the advantages of owning one.

We’ll then move on to discussing the different types available and important things worth considering before purchasing one, before wrapping it up with an in-depth section about what we believe to be some of the best car covers available today.

What Exactly Are Car Covers?

Car covers are becoming increasingly popular, but not everybody knows what they exactly are or what it is they do.

Simply put, it’s a large and removable piece of fabric that’s placed over a car for protection. You can get smaller windshield covers that cover the front window only, but in this guide we’re concentrating on covers that go over and protect your entire vehicle.

Outdoors, a cover protects a vehicle from the likes of environmental and tough weather damage. Indoors, it shields your car from the likes of scratches, dust, and small furry animals. Regardless of whether you have your car parked outdoors or in a garage, its paint is thin, fragile, and (oftentimes quite) expensive to replace.

The solution? This inexpensive (yet very practical accessory) can keep your car in pristine condition.

Available in a variety of types, materials, colors, uses, and weight, options to choose from are plentiful nowadays. Throughout this article, we’ll elaborate on each of these aspects and which ones are important.

The Benefits of Using Car Covers

Clear coat finishes are extremely delicate and can easily deteriorate. To prevent this from happening (or delay it as much as possible), the best automotive covers out there offer many benefits to safe guard it against external threats.

Protects Against Weather

Most covers can be used all year round, offering different benefits in winter and summer.

Unfortunately, rain doesn’t only leave non-aesthetic watermarks on your car – it can also squeeze inside tiny cracks and spaces, creating corrosion and rust, eventually leading to irreversible damage and even water leaking into your car.

Salt water or acid rain—caused by atmospheric pollution—might even cause greater damage to your vehicle.

A waterproof or water-resistant cover will keep rain, humidity, and moisture at bay when your car is not in use.

Wind often carries dust, debris, or even sand and grit. You can only imagine the outcome when these reach your car at high speed.

To best defend your car’s paint against these, you’ll want to ensure that your cover fits tightly around the car. Elastic hems, pull strings, and straps with buckles are all useful wind-protector accessories.

Sunshine and Heat

Looking at maintaining the vibrant color of your car? Most vehicles—especially those with gloss or clear coat—are built-in with a certain level of UV protection.

Over time, however, intense and continuous exposure to UV (ultraviolet) rays can pass through. Because of this, you’ll end up with discolored and damaged paint.

High heat can also cause the car’s interior to degrade. Leather seats and plastic dashboards can heat up and weaken, causing cracks to form.

Have you ever faced this lose-lose situation of either being late waiting for the air conditioner to cool the car down or burning yourself on the steering wheel and seat? Most black colored material and metal parts can become a danger under high-intensity heat.

Not to worry too much about this, though, as the best car covers should remedy all of these issues and more.

To know more about how the sun can cause damage to your vehicle, this video might be of interest:

In winter season, rain could be the least of your worries. Using an ice scraper or snow brush to remove snow and ice from your vehicle can lead to marks and scratches.

A car cover will make snow removal a breeze, and you may soon be the envy of your neighbors! It can also protect against light hail, in case you need it. For large hailstones, you may need to invest in a capsule cover (more on these to come later on in this article).

Protects Against Dents, Scratches, and Dings

Finding your vehicle dented by a stray shopping cart or by an opening door can be infuriating, to say the least. When stored in a garage, a car is often surrounded by hazardous clutter – and personally, bikes have been my main enemy as of late.

Acting as a shield to your car, covers can help prevent these frustrating experiences.

Protection Against Natural Hazards

Weather isn’t the only natural cause of damage, mother nature can sometimes play against us in other ways.

Birds might be the most innocent-looking culprits, leaving their droppings all over our freshly cleaned cars. These droppings also have an incredible ability to wear off the car’s top layer of paint.

Getting bird droppings off your vehicle needs serious elbow grease once they dry. A cover can be easily washed or wiped off if it has bird droppings all over it, which makes the cleaning process much easier.

Using a car cover makes parking under the shade of a tree – away from the sun – less hazardous.

Without one, the shade might not seem too appealing after all when you find your vehicle wrapped in a coat of leaves, sap, nuts, or pollen. A cover creates a layer of protection between nature and your car.

When you have your car sit idle for a period of time, small animals and vermin may decide to turn your tailpipe into a comfortable nest. Some might even make meals out of your wires!

Cats don’t cause as much damage internally, but a neighboring cat could leave its digital claw print all over your car, and squirrels can jump on hoods as well.

Using a well-fitting cover on your car while stored will keep these furry friends away.

Dust might not seem all that harmful, with most people believing that only a quick wipe is needed to return your vehicle to its original color.

After some time, however, dust becomes abrasive and can create scratches over your vehicle, particularly when you go to wash it. Every car owner should do their best to keep dust away from their vehicle.

Tip: If you do suffer small scratches from dust abrasion, use one of the best scratch removers from our guide for an easy and effective repair.

Protects Against Theft

Although a cover consists of a thin layer of fabric, it takes extra time to take it off. Removing one that includes a cable and lock would take even longer, and should discourage most thieves looking to remain discreet and finish their dirty work fast before getting attention.

If the vehicle itself isn’t the target, windows are usually broken in order to steal valuable contents. A car cover will provide a layer of protection and hide the objects you have inside from view, such as bags, expensive jackets, or stereo.

Nonetheless, this is a good time to remind you not to store expensive objects inside your car unless you absolutely must.

Different Types of Car Covers

Depending on your lifestyle and what you’re looking for in a car covers, several types are available for you to choose from.

Indoor Car Covers

Indoor covers are meant for those looking to keep their vehicles in a closed environment, whether in a garage or parked under cover. These covers shouldn’t be used outside, as they won’t keep your car safe from intense light, rain or snow.

Because they aren’t waterproof or water-resistant, they’re usually made of cotton, polyester or a mix of both (we’ll elaborate on materials further down.)

So, what exactly do they protect your vehicle from if it isn’t outdoors? Well, all those things we mentioned earlier that can hang around in garages. Bicycles, garden or construction tools—along with less useful items—presenting great danger for your car’s paint.

Dust can also accumulate and create minuscule scratches, and those small animals that can find their way inside are now deterred from doing so.

Outdoor Car Covers

Also called weatherproof or all-weather covers, these can be used both indoors and outdoors. In fact, this is one of the most popular types because of its versatility.

They come in various qualities and specifications – most, however, should repel heat and UV light, and protect your vehicle against all weather conditions and natural hazards.

They’re designed to be breathable and allow good air circulation, and will dry quickly after the rain stops. For additional water-resistance, most contain polyethylene material.

These models usually consist of several layers for maximum protection. So, this means they’re heavier and generally more expensive.

They’re ideal for anyone looking to leave their car outside, whether for a short or extended period of time. Left in a parking lot during a vacation or in the street, outdoor covers should be able to protect a car as needed in most situations.

Universal Covers

Universal covers generally come in a baggy shape, and are designed to fit most car models and sizes. They’re usually the least expensive (although there are some exceptions to this) and are readily available in many car stores – even from large retailers such as Walmart.

On the downside, the wind could take advantage of the loose fit design to get inside, bringing dust along.

Being bigger in size, they’re likely to be more difficult to attach, and people have a tendency to drag them over their vehicle, scratching the paint in the process. If not fixed on properly, they could also blow loose in the wind and either scratch the car or fly off altogether.

These types are useful for both indoor and outdoor uses, but sheltered areas with low wind conditions are preferable if used outside.

Ready-Fit Car Covers

More fitted than universal models, ready-fit car covers are designed to suit a specific type of vehicle: vans, pickups, small cars, SUVs, etc.

Because of their tighter fit, they won’t be as likely to let the wind, sand or dust penetrate. Most also include added features for additional wind protection, such as straps or wheel ropes.

They can be easily ordered in stores and should be available for you to use within a few days.

Ready-fit types might be a good option for anyone looking for a close-fitting cover at a reasonable price.

Custom Fit Car Covers

The custom fit type might be ideal for owners of classic cars, or those with unique shapes, such as Mustangs, Porschesor Corvettes. They’re meant for those looking for the closest-fit cover and maximum protection available.

They’re tailored to perfectly match your vehicle’s measurements, including antenna, mirror, splitter or spoiler. You might even be able to pick a color to match your car or garage!

They can be used both indoors and outdoors, but you’ll usually have to set a much higher budget for custom fit car covers, and will have to wait at least a couple of weeks until yours is ready.

They might represent a bigger investment on the front end, but you’ll likely find that it’s more than worth it. If budget allows, custom-fit covers are considered to be the best to protect your vehicle against just about any outside hazard.

Car Capsule Covers

Car capsule covers are usually designed for expensive collection cars. They can be used both indoors and outdoors, and consist of an inflatable bubble enveloping the entire vehicle.

They’ll prevent anyone from coming into close contact with your vehicle. They can even filter the air coming in, keeping dust and debris away.

These bubbles also come in a tent shape, and for this, you’ll need a considerable amount of space.

Partial Coverage

Looking to secure only a select few parts of your vehicle? Partial covers are available, which will only protect particular sections of your vehicle such as the roof or the front part of a pickup truck, for example

Leaving the remainder of the vehicle exposed, they’re normally less expensive than full covers, making them an excellent choice for those who don’t need to cover everything altogether.

What Should I Consider Before Buying A Car Cover?

Now that we’ve discussed the different types of car covers available, let’s have a look at what other elements you should consider before purchasing one.

Materials can be grouped into five categories: waterproof, water-resistant, non-water resistant, UV light resistant, and soft lining material.

Waterproof Covers

Polyethylene—sometimes referred to as PE—is a type of plastic that’s durable, waterproof and also tends to be inexpensive.

Full plastic models used to be the most popular ones several years ago, when all of the present options weren’t as available as they are today.

However, they trap condensation between the material and your vehicle. This extra moisture often attacks the paint, which sometimes leads to damaging your vehicle even more than if it was left exposed to the environment.

If you’ve inherited an old plastic cover, you can certainly use it indoors. Simply place a piece of absorbent fabric between the material and your car to trap any extra moisture – the fabrics will also offer an extra layer of protection.

Today, many waterproof products include polyethylene mixed with polyester for better breathability.

Water-Resistant Covers

Also referred to as breathable car covers, these normally contain polyester. Although this material isn’t waterproof, it’s water-resistant and mainly found in outdoor covers, but is also a component in a few indoor covers as well.

The material provides good breathability and airflow, which prevents mold and mildew from growing or accumulating. This means you’re less likely to find any stains on your car’s paintwork.

However, polyester is a synthetic fabric that can potentially scratch your car. To solve this issue, manufacturers often add a soft cotton lining to protect the paint.

When it comes to water-resistance level, it’s best to consider the number of layers it’s made of. The thinnest ones only contain one layer of fabric, while the sturdiest can be composed of seven or even 10 layers. Generally speaking, a good water-resistant cover should have three to five layers.

Non-Water Resistant

Cotton is a breathable fabric and comes in a cloth or flannel style. It’s the material of choice for the inner lining of the cover, as it’s non-abrasive and should prevent scratches.

Because cotton is neither waterproof nor water-resistant, it should only be used indoors.

With that being said, it’s worth knowing that cotton and polyester can sometimes be found blended. These polyester cotton covers aren’t recommended for outdoor use, either.

UV-Resistant – Aluminum

In order to protect your vehicle against UV rays, some models include a layer of aluminum. Light and thin, this material is also efficient in keeping the heat away during hot summer days.

Soft Lining Materials

As pointed out earlier, the best car covers should include a soft lining to avoid scratches. Cotton, fleece, polypropylene, micro fiber, silk, or woven nylon are often utilized to achieve this.

What’s the Best Combination?

Of course, the ideal combination will vary depending on the use. Most would agree, however, that the best car covers are made with at least three types of layers: waterproof, water-resistant, and soft linings.

A layer of aluminum is also a useful addition for those living in a hot climate with high sun intensity.

Where You Park

To select the best car cover for your vehicle, consider where you’re planning to leave it. Are you planning on having it indoors, outside, or possibly a mix of both?

Covers are available for any of these uses, but remember that indoor products are not meant to be used outdoors.

If leaving your car outside, you might need extra protection when parked in a busy street with heavy traffic or children at play. If you park in an area subject to theft, a product including grommets, cable and a lock is recommended.

How Often You’re Using Your Car

Are you using your car on a daily or weekly basis? If so, then it’s preferable to pick one that is lightweight, easy to attach, easy to remove, and easy to fold.

Are you storing your vehicle for most of the year? A waterproof, heavier, and sturdier cover will probably be better for this. Some even come with reflective straps to keep your vehicle highly visible, especially at night.

For long term outdoor storage, universal-fit models aren’t recommended. To find your vehicle the way you left it, tighter-fit models—such as ready-fit or custom-fit—would be preferable. Mirror pockets enable an even closer fit, and elasticized hems should help prevent bugs and small animals from getting inside.

The Weather

Where you live can make a huge difference in the type of cover you should consider using. The amount of rain, snow, wind, heat, and sun your vehicle gets exposed to will determine the material and type needed.

Areas that see a lot of rain and snow would be better suited with waterproof—or at least highly water-resistant—products.

In hot and sunny climates, you may want to ensure the model has UV protection built in, ideally containing a layer of aluminum.

With high-intensity sun and heat, lighter colors are also preferable as they help deflect heat. Some dark color covers may also bleed under extreme heat. Silver reflective colors should be ideal to keep your vehicle cool until its next use.

If you’re expecting strong winds, you’ll want to select a cover that is as tightly fitted as possible—probably something ready-fit or custom-fit. The best ones for these situations come with pull strings, elastic hems, and straps.

Your Car Size and Model

It’s important to select a car cover adapted to your vehicle. Choose one that’s too large, and the wind and dust can easily get in. On the other hand, choose one that’s too small, and it won’t fully fit your vehicle.

Covers do have a ‘front’ and back’ position that you need to know about. A ‘front’ label is normally found inside the cover for guidance. If not setup properly, your cover won’t fit correctly.

When shopping around for a car cover, we recommend that you take along your car measurements with you, particularly if you’re choosing a universal or ready-fit cover. For the best results, look for the nearest size up from your vehicle’s dimensions.

Are you often on the road? In such a case, covers can get bulky and take up too much space at times.

If you’re traveling often, or your car has a small trunk, you might prefer to get a cover that is compact and includes a storage bag.

Some models come with a vertical zipper alongside the driver front door for convenience purposes.

Forgot your phone? No need to remove the cover, simply unzip it and retrieve your forgotten item! Sometimes, these little extras can make a big difference.

How Do Car Covers Work?

Caring for your cover means caring for your car, and you need to know what you’re doing with a cover – or else mistakes can happen, quite possibly costly ones as well.

For most vehicles, the installation procedure remains identical.

  1. Fold the door mirrors in.
  2. Place the folded cover on your car’s roof, towards the center. Some include a ‘front’ and/or ‘back’ label. Use these to ensure you’re setting it up properly.
  3. Start by gently unfolding it from front to back of the vehicle.
  4. Unfold the sides.
  5. If it comes with mirror pockets, adjust these first.
  6. Place and tuck the cover over the back and front bumpers of your car.
  7. If it comes with grommets and a cable lock, secure the cable to one of the two grommets. Attach the lock at the end of the cable—giving it some weight—and throw it under the car to the opposite side. Lock the cable on the second grommet.
  8. You’re done!

  1. If you’ve used a lock and cable, remove them first.
  2. Untuck the cover from the back and front bumpers.
  3. Start by folding the sides up, back to the center of your vehicle’s roof.
  4. Finally, fold it starting from each bumper, back to the center of the car.
  5. Once folded, place it in its storage bag—if it comes with one—to avoid deterioration and dust formation.

If the cover is frozen, don’t remove it. Doing this might not only cause damage to your car, but to the fabric as well. Instead, pour room temperature water over it to melt the ice first. Never pour hot water on it, as your windows underneath could crack under the heat.

In this case, if you need to remove the cover while it’s wet, it will have to be dried somewhere clean and dust-free before folding and storing as described above.

What About the Antenna?

The best custom-fit models come with a special hole and a grommet or patch to place the antenna.

Some universal types may come with a hole, but you might need to purchase the grommet separately to avoid damaging the edges.

The most inexpensive ones won’t come with a hole, so you’ll need to make a small ¾-inch cut yourself. Or, you can simply remove the antenna entirely, if possible. This process could become cumbersome if you’re using the cover on your vehicle on a daily basis, so be careful about that.

Do Car Covers Cause Scratches?

This might be the most commonly asked question when it comes to car covers – and the answer is no, good ones shouldn’t. If they were to cause scratches, most manufacturers would go out of business.

They do, however, rely on you to take care when using them and know what you’re doing. Dragging a cover over the clear coat or installing it on a dirty car can – and oftentimes will – cause scratches, leaving you needing to repair the clear coat. Universal or loose-fit models should be carefully strapped down to avoid picking up debris carried by the wind.

We have some good news, though: With a proper installation and removal technique, your car should remain mark-free.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with this process, let’s go over this important routine.

Cleaning a Car Cover

Once you’ve picked and purchased your ideal car cover, you’ll want to keep it in good condition for as long as possible.

Why Clean It?

If left unattended, a damaged cover can do more harm than good, often scratching your car’s paint. Built-up dirt can also decrease the material’s water-resistance and breathability.

How to Clean It?

Most covers come with cleaning instructions from the manufacturer. If you’re having trouble locating your booklet, the company should be able to provide this information to you through other means, either on their website or through a contact number.

Although some covers might require dry cleaning (e.g. satin lining), here are some general guidelines about how car covers need to be washed.

Machine Washable

  • Machines with agitators aren’t recommended.
  • Cold water should be used and softeners should be avoided.
  • Rinse the cover multiple times.
  • Air-dry is preferred for custom-fit models. Cotton, cotton-polyethylene blend, and flannel materials can however be machine dried at low heat.

Hand Wash

  • Place the cover over your vehicle
  • Use a water hose and gently use a sponge to remove dirt.
  • Turn the cover over to clean the other side. If your model includes a soft fleece lining, avoid washing the inside.
  • After rinsing, air-dry is preferable.
  • It’s best to avoid air-drying a waterproof model on top of a vehicle, as the moisture will get trapped inside.

How Often to Clean It?

When you can physically see a build up of dirt on your car cover, this can cause damage to your car, so it’s time for a wash.

With that being said, be aware that washing it too frequently can decrease its water-resistance performance.

Replacing a Car Cover

A good quality cover should last you a few years, and some models even include a 2-year warranty.

Rough weather, however, might wear it faster. Often, exterior damage is apparent. The cover fabric itself might start to separate, holes appear, or the fabric is no longer as waterproof or water-resistant as it once was.

Any signs like these likely mean it’s time for a replacement.

Car covers aren’t only convenient for saving precious time in snowy weather conditions, they can also help you save a lot of money down the line by protecting your vehicle’s paintwork and interior from harmful UV rays and heat. In short, you need them to ensure your vehicle is kept in pristine condition while it’s in storage.

In fact, car covers might be one of the most inexpensive accessories you’ll ever purchase for your ride, but that doesn’t mean they don’t do much. On the contrary, they can provide tremendous benefits.

From childhood go karting and motocross, to collecting and obsessing over scalextric, matchbox and radio controlled cars, I've always had an obsession with cars. Learning through manuals, books, trial and error, and more knowledgeable family members, I've also enjoyed tinkering with the mechanics and electronics of any vehicles I've owned. Now, over 3 decades later, I've started this site as a place for me to share my knowledge, to teach others how to care for and maintain their vehicles themselves, at home, so they can get the most of their vehicles and save a pretty penny compared to always seeking out professional help.
